In a major development, the Supreme Court has granted bail to Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal in the alleged liquor policy scam. Kejriwal, who has been in judicial custody for the past six months, had been granted temporary bail for a few days two months ago ahead of the Lok Sabha Elections. Today’s decision offers a significant relief to the Aam Aadmi Party leader.
The bail plea was argued by senior advocate Abhishek Singhvi, who highlighted that his client had already fulfilled the legal requirements for bail, known as the ‘triple test’. Singhvi reminded the court that Arvind Kejriwal had been granted bail previously in the case involving the Enforcement Directorate (ED), which investigates money laundering aspects of the alleged scam.
The ‘Triple Test’ and Kejriwal’s Defense
Singhvi emphasized that Kejriwal satisfied the three necessary conditions for bail, which include: ensuring that the accused will not tamper with evidence, pose a flight risk, or repeat the alleged offense while out on bail. Given that Arvind Kejriwal had been granted bail before under these conditions, Singhvi argued that his continued detention was unwarranted.
The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), however, has built a strong case against Kejriwal, presenting what they claim is overwhelming evidence. Much of their case relies on testimony from ‘approvers’ — individuals who were formerly accused but have been pardoned or promised lighter sentences in exchange for providing evidence against the Delhi CM.

CBI officials maintain that these testimonies are crucial, revealing key details of Kejriwal’s alleged involvement in the controversial liquor policy. They argue that despite the bail, the evidence against him should not be overlooked.
Political and Legal Impact
The decision to grant bail has sparked debate across political circles, with supporters of Arvind Kejriwal hailing it as a victory for justice, while critics question the implications of the ongoing investigations. This case has cast a shadow over Kejriwal’s administration and the policies implemented during his tenure.
Legal experts suggest that while bail does not imply innocence, it could provide Kejriwal and his party some breathing room as they prepare their defense for the trials ahead. However, the CBI’s case remains active, and the road to clearing his name is far from over.
