On Saturday, Union Home Minister Amit Shah responded to Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal who said Prime Minister Narendra Modi will not complete his full term if the BJP comes to power. Kejriwal said he is seeking votes to make Shah the Prime Minister.
In response, Amit Shah clarified that there’s no such retirement age rule in the BJP’s constitution and affirmed the continuity of PM Modi’s leadership. He emphasised that PM Modi will complete his current term and continue to lead the country thereafter, dismissing speculations by Arvind Kejriwal.
Arvind Kejriwal, after his release from jail, criticised PM Modi for promoting a “one nation, one leader” concept, referencing the BJP’s advocacy for a synchronized election system.
Arvind Kejriwal questioned the BJP about its future Prime Ministerial candidate, highlighting PM Modi’s upcoming 75th birthday and linking it to a supposed retirement age rule set in 2014. Arvind Kejriwal suggested that PM Modi might be paving the way for Amit Shah to take over.
Amit Shah criticised Kejriwal’s interpretation of his interim bail, emphasising that it’s a temporary relief specifically for election campaigning and doesn’t absolve him of the charges related to the liquor policy case. Amit Shah pointed out that Kejriwal’s understanding of legal matters appears inadequate if he views the interim bail as exoneration.
Under the terms of the interim bail, Kejriwal is restricted from accessing his office, signing official documents, or visiting the Delhi secretariat without permission from the Lieutenant Governor for urgent matters.
The Supreme Court justified granting interim bail due to the ongoing Lok Sabha elections, citing the impracticality of concluding legal proceedings during this period. This decision allows Arvind Kejriwal to participate in campaign activities until June 1, after which he must surrender to the investigating agencies.
