Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav has announced his candidacy for the 2024 Lok Sabha election from Uttar Pradesh’s Kannauj seat.
The announcement was made by the party on X (formerly Twitter) Wednesday evening. Akhilesh Yadav, a former Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh, will file his nomination papers at noon on Thursday.
Kannauj has been a stronghold of the Samajwadi Party, although it was won by the BJP’s Subrat Pathak in the 2019 election. Prior to that, the seat was held for two terms by Akhilesh Yadav’s wife, Dimple Yadav. Akhilesh Yadav himself won the seat in the 2000 bypoll and in the 2004 and 2009 full elections.
The 2000 bypoll was necessitated by the passing of Akhilesh Yadav’s father, SP patriarch Mulayam Singh Yadav, who had won the seat in the 1999 general election.
Akhilesh Yadav, a prominent figure in Indian politics, has made significant contributions as a leader known for his progressive vision and youthful dynamism.
Akhilesh Yadav rose to prominence within the Samajwadi Party (SP), inheriting the legacy of his father. He served as the Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh from 2012 to 2017, during which he implemented several developmental initiatives aimed at improving infrastructure, education, and healthcare in the state.
His tenure witnessed the launch of ambitious projects like the Agra-Lucknow Expressway and the Samajwadi Pension Yojana, aimed at uplifting marginalized communities.
Yadav is known for his emphasis on youth empowerment and inclusive governance. Under his leadership, the SP has advocated for social justice and the welfare of farmers and marginalized communities.
Despite facing challenges and criticisms, Yadav remains a key figure in Uttar Pradesh politics, with his strategic approach and grassroots connect resonating with the electorate. As Uttar Pradesh continues to play a pivotal role in Indian politics, Yadav’s influence and leadership style continue to shape the state’s political landscape.
