A man can be seen forcing himself through a small aperture inside a 165-year-old coal mine in a video that has gone viral on social media. The video was posted on Instagram by Underground Birmingham, and it has received over 50,000 views.
At the beginning of the video, the adventurer lowers into a tiny pit that is full of sand and loose rocks. The man looks like he has to squeeze through a narrow tunnel where the roof hardly makes room for him. It’s a tight fit, but he slides down and emerges into a surprisingly big cavern.

The explorer uses a headlamp to illuminate the mine’s inside, which includes a brick wall and concrete that has been poured. He describes the area as a “very, very old” coal mine, determining that it was likely built in the 1860s and roughly 165 years old based on the year of entry.
The cave can be seen dipping downhill in the footage, suggesting that there may be a huge network of tunnels beneath the surface.
Exploring abandoned mines can be dangerous, even though the film has piqued people’s interest. The potential for cave-ins, poisonous gas pockets, and flooding exists in these potentially unstable structures.
Social media users who saw the daring move of passing through the tunnel were equally astonished and left their opinions on the post.
A user wrote, “I don’t know how you guys do this. I get anxious just watching.” Another user wrote, “What are you going to do if you get stuck one day?” A third user wrote, “I’m out of breath just watching it…Definitely, Congratulations to those of you who have psychological control and tranquility. I would have dug already to make more room before I went in.”
