Senior AAP leader and Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Singh has been released from Tihar Jail after he spent six months behind bars in connection with the Delhi liquor policy case. His release comes a day after the Supreme Court granted him bail, noting the absence of evidence linking him to the alleged bribes received by the AAP for liquor licenses.

Welcomed by a large crowd of AAP supporters upon his release, Sanjay Singh addressed the gathering, expressing confidence that other party leaders, including Arvind Kejriwal, Manish Sisodia, and Satyendar Jain, who are also detained in the case, will soon be released.

He said, “Mera bharosa hai ki jail ke taale tootenge (I firmly believe that the jailed leaders will be out).”

Singh’s release is seen as a political statement, as he plans to visit Kejriwal’s house to meet the Delhi Chief Minister’s wife, Sunita, before heading to the AAP office to address party workers.

Like Kejriwal, Sanjay Singh was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate probing the money laundering aspect of the liquor policy case. Following Singh’s bail, senior AAP leader and Delhi Minister Atishi said the court’s decision vindicates the party’s stance regarding the inability of authorities to trace the alleged bribe money and coercion of witnesses.

The arrests of opposition leaders, including Kejriwal’s former deputy Manish Sisodia and BRS leader K Kavitha, in the same case, have become a focal point for opposition parties ahead of the Lok Sabha elections.

They allege misuse of central agencies by the BJP to stifle opposition voices and disrupt a level playing field necessary for fair elections.

Singh’s bail, granted by the Supreme Court, questioned the rationale behind his prolonged detention without evidence or trial. While allowing him to engage in political activities, the court clarified that its decision should not set a precedent.
