New Delhi: In a bid to ramp up support for Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and uphold democratic principles, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) is gearing up for a historic rally at the Ramlila Maidan on March 31. The event, organised by the INDIA Alliance, aims to rally individuals from various sectors of society, including students, youth, Resident Welfare Associations (RWAs), NGOs and social organisations.
Preparations for the rally have been intensified, with Delhi state convenor Gopal Rai announcing extensive outreach efforts. Beginning March 27, party officials and councillors will engage with the public across all polling stations in Delhi.
Subsequently, starting March 28, 2,600 teams will conduct door-to-door campaigns to invite people to join the rally, the AAP said in a statement on Tuesday. Additionally, ministers and MLAs have been appointed as observers to review the preparations at the assembly level.
Rai condemned the recent arrest of Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal by the BJP-led central government, labelling it as an assault on democracy. He criticised the excessive use of police force during protests, citing instances where peaceful demonstrators were detained and harassed.
He further stated how the BJP-led central government, by imposing Section 144, has turned Delhi into a police state.
Addressing the Centre, Rai said, “I would like to say this to the central government that you cannot stop this movement using your police force. Our voice is reaching the entire country, our next target is to make it louder through the mega rally by the INDIA Alliance on March 31 at the Ramlila Maidan. Prominent leaders from the INDIA Alliance from across the nation will be joining this rally.”
The AAP leader emphasized the importance of the upcoming rally, stating that it symbolizes the collective struggle to preserve constitutional values and democratic rights. He urged people from all walks of life to participate, stressing that the fight against dictatorship transcends party lines.
Furthermore, Rai outlined the action plan for the mega rally, highlighting the appointment of observers to ensure effective coordination and monitoring of preparations. Leaders such as Saurabh Bharadwaj, Imran Hussain and Raaj Kumar Anand have been tasked with overseeing the progress on the ground.
The rally, slated to commence at 10 am on March 31, is expected to draw significant crowds. Prominent leaders from the INDIA Alliance across the nation are set to join the event, amplifying the message against authoritarianism.
Rai reiterated the significance of the rally in the ongoing struggle for democracy. He called upon citizens to unite in large numbers at Ramlila Maidan, emphasizing that their voices would reverberate across the country, heralding a new chapter in the fight for democratic ideals.
