In a major move for women’s empowerment and clean energy in Chhattisgarh, the government has approved 1.59 lakh new LPG connections for eligible women under the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana. These connections will be distributed through the “Sushasan Tihar” and “Niyad Nella Naar Yojana”, enabling rural and forest-dwelling women to access cleaner cooking fuel and improve household health.
Government Sanctions 25 Lakh LPG Connections Nationwide
Overall, the Government of India has approved 25 lakh new LPG connections across the country under the Ujjwala Yojana. Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Petroleum Minister Hardeep Singh Puri for the decision, calling it a “pathway to women’s empowerment and societal development.”
“Chhattisgarh’s women have always been the backbone of their families and society. Through Ujjwala Yojana, they are receiving the dignity and support they truly deserve,” said the Chief Minister.
Women’s Empowerment Through Clean Energy
Sai emphasized that the additional connections will significantly improve the quality of life in Chhattisgarh, particularly in rural and forested regions where traditional cooking methods contribute to pollution-related health issues.

Currently, around 28 lakh women in Chhattisgarh are already benefitting from Ujjwala Yojana. The new 1.59 lakh LPG connections will strengthen the state’s clean energy mission, helping more women across villages and remote areas to cook safely and sustainably.
Impact on Rural Households
With access to LPG, women in Chhattisgarh can now move away from firewood and coal-based cooking, reducing indoor air pollution and health risks. The initiative also fosters financial savings and empowerment, allowing women to contribute more effectively to their households and communities.
