A National Investigation Agency (NIA) team came under attack in Bhupatinagar, located in West Bengal’s East Midnapore district, on Saturday morning while investigating a blast case from 2022 at the residence of a Trinamool Congress leader.
According to initial reports, the NIA team’s car was pelted with bricks, resulting in damage to the windscreen. The incident occurred around 5:30 am when locals surrounded the vehicle and hurled stones at it. A senior police official stated that one NIA officer sustained injuries in the attack.
The Hindustan Times quoted a news agency and said earlier in the morning, the NIA team had apprehended two individuals in connection with the blast case and was returning to Kolkata when the assault occurred.
The NIA has lodged a police complaint regarding the attack. A significant deployment of central police forces has been dispatched to Bhupatinagar, where the NIA team and the two arrested individuals are currently stationed, according to police sources.
The blast incident on December 3, 2022, resulted in the destruction of a house with a thatched roof in Bhupatinagar, claiming the lives of three persons.
Last month, the NIA summoned eight Trinamool Congress leaders for questioning regarding the blast case. The TMC has accused the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of orchestrating the NIA’s actions, alleging that the BJP provided a list of TMC leaders in Purba Medinipur district to the NIA with the intention of arresting them.
This attack on the NIA team follows a similar incident two months ago, where a team of Enforcement Directorate (ED) officials was assaulted during a raid on the residence of Sheikh Shahjahan, a suspended local TMC leader in Sandeshkhali.
The ED officers, accompanied by central force personnel, were attacked by a mob while attempting to apprehend Shahjahan in connection with a multi-crore ration distribution scam in West Bengal. Three ED officers were hospitalised due to injuries sustained in the attack, prompting CRPF personnel to intervene and restore order.
