Darjeeling Bridge Collapse | Heavy Rainfall and IMD Alert: Several lost their lives in heavy rains and landslides in West Bengal’s Darjeeling on Sunday, officials confirmed. Continuous rainfall led to widespread damage, including the collapse of the Dhudia iron bridge over the Balason River at Dudhia, which connects Siliguri and Mirik.

Local residents in Mirik reported that a major landslide occurred at Dara Gaon near Soureni.
According to the latest update, at least seven people have died due to the landslides triggered by excessive rainfall. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for several districts, warning of more heavy rainfall and the possibility of further landslides and flooding.

Widespread Damage and Loss of Life
BJP MP from Darjeeling Raju Bista expressed deep grief over the loss of lives and property caused by the extreme weather conditions.
“I am extremely anguished to learn about the massive damages caused due to extremely heavy rainfall in many parts of Darjeeling and Kalimpong districts. There have been deaths, and loss of properties, and damages to the infrastructure. I am taking stock of the situation, and in touch with the relevant authorities,” Bista wrote on X.

Local residents in Mirik reported that a major landslide occurred at Dara Gaon near Soureni, hitting a house in the middle of the night and killing four people who were asleep.

“They had gone to Dara Gaon from Salbari near Siliguri to celebrate Dasai (Dusshera), the biggest festival of the Gorkhas,” said Aditya Pradhan, Mirik Panchayat Samiti leader.
The Dhudia bridge collapse has severely disrupted connectivity between key areas of Siliguri and Mirik, making rescue and relief operations more challenging amid continuing heavy rainfall.
IMD Red Alert for North Bengal
The India Meteorological Department on Saturday issued a red alert for Darjeeling, Kalimpong, Cooch Behar, Jalpaiguri, and Alipurduar, warning of extremely heavy rainfall and the risk of flash floods and landslides.
As per the latest nowcast from RMC Kolkata, a red alert remains in place for Alipurduar, while an orange alert for heavy rainfall has been issued for Cooch Behar, Jalpaiguri, Kalimpong, and Darjeeling.
Authorities have urged residents in vulnerable areas to remain cautious and avoid travelling near hilly terrain and riverbanks until weather conditions improve.
