Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy arrived at the White House on Friday for a meeting with US President Donald Trump to finalize a deal on rare minerals. However, what was intended to be a high-level diplomatic discussion quickly turned into a dramatic confrontation in front of the international media inside the Oval Office.
Zelensky’s Attire Sparks Controversy
Before the tensions escalated, a journalist questioned Zelenskyy about his choice of attire, asking, “Why don’t you wear a suit? Do you own a suit?” The question sparked laughter among Trump, US Vice President JD Vance, and senior officials present in the room.
Zelenskyy, known for his signature military-style clothing since the onset of the Russia-Ukraine war in 2022, responded sharply, “Do you have a problem?” The reporter then replied, “A lot of Americans have a problem with those who don’t respect the dress code of the Oval Office.”

In response, Zelenskyy firmly stated, “I will wear a suit after this war finishes. Maybe something like yours, maybe something better. I don’t know, we will see. Maybe something cheaper. Thank you.”
Trump interjected in support of Zelenskyy, saying that he “liked” the Ukrainian leader’s outfit.

Social Media Backlash: Comparisons to Elon Musk
The exchange quickly went viral, with social media users pointing out that billionaire Elon Musk, a close ally of Trump, had attended a US cabinet meeting in a T-shirt and baseball cap.
“What was Elon Musk’s excuse for wearing a T-shirt to a cabinet meeting and a hat?” one user wrote on X.

Another user posted a photo of Musk at Trump’s first cabinet meeting on February 26, dressed casually in a jacket, T-shirt, and a “Make America Great Again” (MAGA) cap. “WHY doesn’t THIS guy wear a suit?” the user questioned.
“No one has the right to even comment on President Zelensky’s outfit when Elon Musk is allowed into a cabinet meeting in a T-shirt and baseball cap! Why don’t they ask Musk if he owns a suit?” another user posted.
Trump-Zelenskyy Clash Over Russia-Ukraine War
The situation inside the Oval Office further escalated when the discussion shifted to the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war. While the meeting began with cordial exchanges and handshakes, tensions flared when Vice President JD Vance emphasized the need for diplomacy to resolve the conflict, which began in 2022 following Russian President Vladimir Putin’s invasion of Ukraine.

Vance accused Zelenskyy of not being “thankful” enough for U.S. support, triggering a sharp response from the Ukrainian leader. Zelenskyy questioned Vance’s calls for diplomacy, which led Trump to step in and back his deputy.

Following the heated exchange, Trump later took to social media, stating that Zelenskyy “can come back when he is ready for peace.”
The dramatic encounter marks the first official meeting between Trump and Zelenskyy since Trump returned to office in January. With Ukraine’s war effort heavily reliant on Western aid, the tense meeting raises further questions about the future of U.S.-Ukraine relations.
