Russian President Vladimir Putin has solidified his control over the country in what is being termed as a record post-Soviet landslide victory in Russia’s recent election on Sunday, a vote widely condemned for its lack of democratic legitimacy.
Addressing his supporters at his campaign headquarters on Sunday evening, Putin dismissed criticisms from the West regarding the elections, stating that such reactions were to be expected.
Emphasizing Russia’s determination to pursue its objectives, Putin declared victory in the highly anticipated presidential election, the outcome of which was widely anticipated. He asserted that despite any attempts to suppress Russia’s will and consciousness, history has shown that such efforts have always failed and will continue to fail.
Putin, a former KGB lieutenant colonel who ascended to power in 1999, emphasized that the election outcome should serve as a clear message to the West, indicating that Russia, under his leadership, will remain a significant force to be reckoned with in both times of conflict and peace for the foreseeable future.

According to the Central Election Commission of Russia, Putin secured approximately 87 percent of the vote with around 60 percent of precincts reporting. This victory is poised to make Putin, at 71 years old, the longest-serving leader in Russia’s modern history, surpassing even Joseph Stalin.
The Communist candidate Nikolay Kharitonov emerged as the runner-up with just under 4 percent of the vote, followed by newcomer Vladislav Davankov in third place and ultra-nationalist Leonid Slutsky in fourth place, based on early results.
The nationwide turnout for the election was reported to be 74.22 percent when the polls closed, exceeding the levels seen in the previous election in 2018.
