Junior doctors have staged protests, refusing to attend to non-emergency patients in various regions, demanding justice for the victim and enhanced safety measures for women in medical facilities.
Banerjee’s post follows a day of unrest, during which an unregistered student group known as ‘Paschim Banga Chhatra Samaj’ and a dissident state government employees’ platform called ‘Sangrami Joutha Mancha’ staged demonstrations, calling for Banerjee’s resignation. The protests culminated in a march to the state secretariat, Nabanna, which saw intense clashes that could not be subdued by police intervention.
The ruling Trinamool Congress accused the opposition BJP of orchestrating the march, noting that the party had also called for a 12-hour “Bengal bandh” to protest against the police’s handling of the situation.
