New Delhi: China Wednesday summoned the American envoy in Beijing to protest US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s visit to Taiwan. China told the US envoy that Washington will “pay a price” for the “mistakes”. The country also asked the US to stop using the Taiwan issue to mount pressure on China.

China’s move came hours after Pelosi addressed the Taiwanese Parliament and said, “Today, our delegation…came to Taiwan to make unequivocally clear we will not abandon our commitment to Taiwan and we are proud of our enduring friendship.”

Later, talking to the media, Pelosi said the US supports status quo and does not want anything to happen to Taiwan by force. “We want Taiwan to always have freedom with security, we are not backing away from that,” Pelosi was quoted by a section of the media.

Speaking alongside Taiwan President Tsai Ing-wen, Pelosi had said, “Now, more than ever, America’s solidarity with Taiwan is crucial, that’s the message we bring in today.”

Amid Pelosi’s visit, more than 20 Chinese fighter jets entered the air space of Taiwan. Beijing’s contention over Pelosi’s visit is that it claims that Taiwan is a part of its territory and is being ruled by Taipei illegally.

Taiwan’s defence ministry in a statement on Twitter said, “21 PLA aircraft … entered #Taiwan’s southwest ADIZ on August 2, 2022.” Amid warnings from China of “grave consequences”, US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi had landed in Taipei airport even as China closed the Taiwan strait and east coast airspace around Xiamen area.
