New Delhi: Liz Truss on Monday defeated Rishi Sunak in the Conservative Party leadership contest to become new Prime Minister of Britain. Truss defeated Sunak by a margin of nearly 20000 votes to replace Boris Johnson who had earlier lost the majority.
Liz Truss, a senior cabinet minister in the UK government, became the female who will take oath as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom. Her victory was confirmed after 170,000 online and postal votes cast by Tory members.
As per the report, Truss got 81,326 votes while Sunak secured 60,399. Out of a total 172,437 electoral votes, total turnout was recorded 82.6 per cent. 654 votes were declared invalid and were rejected.
After the victory, Liz Truss thanked people for supporting her for the top post. She said, “I am honoured to be elected Leader of the Conservative Party. Thank you for putting your trust in me to lead and deliver for our great country. I will take bold action to get all of us through these tough times, grow our economy, and unleash the United Kingdom’s potential.”

Earlier when voting was closed, Sunak had thanked people for supporting him. Sunak had said, “Thank you to all my colleagues, campaign team and, of course, all the members who came out to meet me and lend your support.”
