Tesla Inc. has initiated hiring in India, as indicated by recent job postings on LinkedIn. This move strongly suggests that the electric vehicle (EV) giant is preparing to enter the Indian market. The hiring spree comes shortly after Tesla CEO Elon Musk met with Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his recent US visit.
Tesla Hiring in India: Job Openings Listed on LinkedIn
According to a Bloomberg report, Tesla has listed 13 job openings in India, spanning customer-facing and back-end roles. The job postings were visible on Tesla’s LinkedIn page on Monday, with positions based in Mumbai and Delhi.
Tesla is recruiting for various positions, including service technicians and advisory roles, in Mumbai and Delhi. Additionally, customer engagement manager and delivery operations specialist roles are specifically available in Mumbai.
Tesla’s Interest in India and Policy Changes
Tesla has expressed interest in entering the Indian market for years. However, steep import duties deterred the company from making a move. The Indian government recently reduced the basic customs duty on high-end cars priced above $40,000 from 110 percent to 70 percent, making India a more attractive market for luxury EV manufacturers.
India’s EV market is still in its early stages compared to China. However, with the government pushing for cleaner energy solutions and incentivizing EV adoption, Tesla sees an opportunity. Last year, India’s EV sales approached 100,000 units—a stark contrast to China’s 11 million EV sales in the same period.

Tesla has been experiencing a slowdown in global sales, recently reporting its first annual drop in EV sales in over a decade. Expansion into emerging markets like India could be part of the company’s strategy to counteract this decline.
PM Modi-Elon Musk Meeting and Trade Discussions
Tesla’s move to hire in India follows PM Modi’s meeting with Elon Musk and former US President Donald Trump in Washington last week. During the discussions, Trump stated that PM Modi had agreed to initiate trade negotiations aimed at reducing the US-India trade deficit and increasing US military sales, including potential F-35 fighter jet supplies to India.
Although Tesla’s hiring activity suggests a serious intent to establish operations in India, the company has not officially confirmed when it will begin selling vehicles in the country. Analysts predict that Tesla will initially focus on importing its EVs to gauge demand before considering setting up a local manufacturing facility.
The Indian government has been encouraging global automakers to invest in domestic EV production. Additional incentives are expected for companies willing to establish local manufacturing units. If Tesla’s Indian expansion aligns with government incentives and market demand, the company may eventually establish a production facility in the country.
As Tesla prepares its entry, the Indian EV landscape is set for a significant transformation, with competition heating up and global players taking notice of the growing market potential.
