In a captivating start to the TATA IPL 2024 season, Punjab Kings claimed a hard-fought victory against Delhi Capitals by securing a four-wicket win in Match 2 at the Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Cricket Stadium in Mullanpur. In what marked the first IPL match at the newly-inaugurated venue, Punjab Kings showcased their mettle with a brilliant display of cricketing prowess.
The chase by Punjab Kings of 175 runs was anchored by stellar performances from Sam Curran, who scored a vital 63 runs off 47 deliveries, and Liam Livingstone, who remained unbeaten with a blistering 38 runs off just 21 balls. Their remarkable partnership played a pivotal role in guiding PBKS to victory after a collective bowling effort had restricted Delhi Capitals to a total of 174/9.
Despite losing openers Shikhar Dhawan and Jonny Bairstow early in the innings, Punjab Kings got off to a brisk start, with Dhawan and Bairstow adding 34 runs in the first three overs. However, Ishant Sharma provided the breakthrough for Delhi Capitals by dismissing Dhawan, followed by Bairstow’s run-out at the non-striker’s end.
Prabhsimran Singh, Punjab Kings’ Impact Player, contributed crucially with a couple of boundaries, steering PBKS to a steady position at 53/2. Although Delhi Capitals managed to keep the pressure on, claiming wickets at strategic intervals, Curran and Livingstone’s partnership turned the tide in Punjab Kings’ favor. Curran’s impressive half-century and Livingstone’s aggressive stroke play propelled PBKS towards the target.
With 63 runs needed off 36 balls, Curran and Livingstone accelerated the scoring rate, seizing the momentum with a flurry of boundaries and sixes. Despite Curran’s departure in the penultimate over, Livingstone’s composed innings, coupled with some errant bowling from Delhi Capitals, ensured Punjab Kings clinched victory with six runs needed off the final over.
Earlier in the match, Delhi Capitals, after winning the toss and opting to bat first, started aggressively but suffered early setbacks with the dismissal of Mitchell Marsh. However, David Warner’s explosive batting and contributions from other batsmen, including Rishabh Pant and Shai Hope, propelled Delhi Capitals to a competitive total of 174/9.
Notable performances from Abishek Porel, Delhi Capitals’ Impact Player, in the latter stages of the innings injected momentum into their innings, as he unleashed a scintillating 10-ball 32*, comprising a flurry of boundaries and sixes.
In a contest marked by thrilling displays of skill and determination, Punjab Kings emerged victorious, setting the tone for what promises to be an exhilarating TATA IPL 2024 season.
