Prohibitory orders, including internet curbs, have been imposed in Ladakh ahead of the planned ‘Pashmina March’ led by climate activist Sonam Wangchuk to highlight the ground realities in the region.
Sonam Wangchuk, currently on a hunger fast in Leh, advised people not to carry out the march but to raise their voices peacefully. The march aimed to address issues like statehood and alleged land grabs by China.
Sonam Wangchuk expressed concern over the deployment of security forces equipped with riot gear in the region, turning Leh into what he described as a “war zone.”
He criticized the disproportionate use of force and attempts to arrest peaceful protesters. He accused the government of prioritising political interests and mining lobbies over the welfare of the people and national security.
The Apex Body of Leh, leading the statehood agitation, withdrew the march citing concerns over the security situation but pledged to continue peaceful protests. The call for the march, inspired by Mahatma Gandhi’s Dandi March, was given by Wangchuk on March 27.
Authorities issued orders citing concerns about the misuse of mobile data and social media to incite public unrest. Prohibitory orders under Section 144 of the Criminal Procedure Code were imposed, restricting public gatherings and the use of loudspeakers without permission.
Wangchuk alleged that protesters were being coerced into signing bonds by the police, pledging not to participate in the march. He urged for restraint and emphasised the sensitivity of the region, calling for peaceful resolution of the issues.
Sonam Wangchuk is an Indian engineer and innovator known for his groundbreaking work in sustainable development, particularly in the Ladakh region. He gained international recognition for inventing the Ice Stupa artificial glacier to address water scarcity in Himalayan desert regions. Wangchuk is also an advocate for education reform.
