In a major administrative reshuffle, former Reserve Bank of India (RBI) Governor Shaktikanta Das has been appointed as the Principal Secretary to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, a government notification confirmed on Saturday. The appointment, made by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet, will be co-terminus with the tenure of the Prime Minister or until further orders, whichever comes earlier.
Das’ Vast Experience in Governance
Shaktikanta Das, who served as the RBI Governor for six years from December 2018, brings with him a wealth of experience spanning four decades in various sectors of governance. Having held key positions in finance, taxation, industries, and infrastructure, his expertise is expected to play a crucial role in policy planning and economic decision-making at the highest level.
During his tenure as RBI Governor, Das played a pivotal role in navigating India’s economy through turbulent times, including the Covid-19 pandemic.
Under his leadership, the central bank implemented a series of monetary and regulatory policies to maintain financial stability and sustain economic growth amid the global crisis. His innovative approaches and policy interventions were widely credited with mitigating the pandemic’s economic impact.
NITI Aayog CEO BVR Subrahmanyam’s Tenure Extended
In another key development, the government has extended the tenure of NITI Aayog CEO BVR Subrahmanyam by one year, beginning February 24, 2025. A retired Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer from the 1987 batch, Subrahmanyam was initially appointed as the chief executive officer of India’s premier policy think tank in February 2023 for a two-year term.

The extension of his tenure underscores the government’s focus on long-term policy planning and economic reform initiatives, particularly as India aims to position itself as a global economic powerhouse. Subrahmanyam has been instrumental in shaping key policy initiatives under the Modi administration, emphasizing economic growth, digital transformation, and structural reforms.
Strategic Moves Ahead of 2024 Elections
The high-profile appointments come at a crucial time, with the 2024 Lok Sabha elections around the corner. The Modi government’s decision to bring in experienced bureaucrats like Das and extend Subrahmanyam’s tenure is being viewed as part of a broader strategy to ensure economic and policy continuity.
As India gears up for its next phase of economic transformation, the roles of Shaktikanta Das and BVR Subrahmanyam will be instrumental in steering the country towards sustainable growth and fiscal stability.
