Shiv Sena (UBT) leader and Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Raut has been convicted in a defamation case filed by Dr Medha Kirit Somaiya, the wife of BJP leader Kirit Somaiya. A metropolitan magistrate in Mumbai‘s Mazgaon Court sentenced Raut to 15 days of imprisonment and imposed a fine of Rs 25,000.
Vivekanand Gupta, the advocate for Dr Somaiya, confirmed the court’s decision, stating, “The Court ordered 15-day imprisonment for Sanjay Raut and imposed a fine of Rs 25,000 on him.”
The Defamation Case
The case stems from accusations made by Sanjay Raut, alleging that Dr Medha Somaiya and her husband were involved in a Rs 100 crore scam related to the construction and maintenance of public toilets in the Mira Bhayandar area.
Dr Somaiya denied the allegations and subsequently filed a defamation suit, claiming that Raut’s statements were baseless and intended to tarnish her and her husband’s reputation.

In her complaint, Dr Somaiya stated, “The statements made by the accused to the media are per se defamatory. The statements have been made to malign my character in the eyes of the general public.”
Fallout from the Verdict
The conviction has created ripples in Maharashtra’s political landscape, particularly between Shiv Sena (UBT) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Sanjay Raut, a prominent leader within the Shiv Sena (UBT) faction led by Uddhav Thackeray, has been a vocal critic of BJP leaders, including Kirit Somaiya.
This is not the first time Sanjay Raut has been embroiled in a legal battle involving defamatory statements. Previously, Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde had also filed a defamation suit against Raut for making allegations in a news article.
Political Reactions
The judgment comes at a time of heightened political tensions in Maharashtra, with both parties preparing for crucial assembly elections. While no immediate statement has been made by Sanjay Raut or his legal team regarding the conviction, the verdict has fueled the ongoing rivalry between the Shiv Sena (UBT) and the BJP.
What’s Next?
With the 15-day jail term imposed by the court, Sanjay Raut is likely to appeal the conviction in a higher court. His legal team may seek a stay on the execution of the sentence pending the appeal process.
The ruling also raises questions about the larger implications for political discourse in Maharashtra, particularly surrounding the use of media to make allegations without evidence. The case underscores the importance of accountability in public statements, especially when they involve claims of corruption and misconduct.
