In a significant development, officials of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) conducted an 11-hour search at the home of Dr. Sandip Ghosh, the former Principal of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata on Sunday. The raid, which lasted late into the evening, resulted in the seizure of multiple documents as the CBI intensifies its investigation into the August 9 rape-murder of a young doctor at the hospital and alleged financial irregularities under Dr. Ghosh’s tenure.

When asked if they had discovered any substantial evidence, a CBI official, while leaving the premises, cryptically remarked, “Bahut kuch hai (Quite a lot),” suggesting that the raid had yielded significant findings.

The CBI also extended its search operations to the residence of former medical superintendent Sanjay Vashisth and 13 other individuals in and around Kolkata. The homes and offices of suppliers involved in providing materials for patient care and hospital management were also searched as part of the probe.

Dr. Sandip Ghosh has been under intense scrutiny, not only for the rape-murder case but also for alleged corruption during his time as Principal. On Friday, following the initiation of a state government investigation into these allegations, the Calcutta High Court handed over the case to the CBI, further amplifying the gravity of the situation.

The CBI’s investigation has already seen Dr. Ghosh undergo a polygraph test. Today, the agency turned its attention to the main accused in the rape-murder case, Sanjay Roy, who was also subjected to extensive questioning. Dr. Ghosh himself faced another round of interrogation, starting from 8 AM, conducted by at least seven CBI officers at his Beliaghata residence.

In addition to Dr. Ghosh, former medical superintendent and vice-principal Sanjay Vashisth and another professor from the forensic medicine department of the institute were questioned by the CBI.

The CBI’s First Information Report (FIR) has named Dr. Ghosh and three Kolkata-based private entities—Ma Tara Traders of Madhya Jhorehat, Banipur, Howrah; Eshan Cafe of Belgachia; and Khama Louha—as accused.

The horrific incident of August 9, where a postgraduate woman doctor was raped and murdered in the seminar hall of RG Kar Hospital, has sparked widespread outrage and nationwide protests from the medical community and civil society. A Kolkata Police civic volunteer has been arrested for the crime, but the CBI’s involvement has brought new dimensions to the investigation.

The CBI has suggested that the crime scene may have been tampered with, raising suspicions of a possible cover-up. This allegation has only deepened concerns about the integrity of the investigation and the extent of corruption at the hospital under Dr. Ghosh’s administration.

As the CBI continues its probe, the focus remains on unraveling the full extent of the alleged crimes and ensuring justice for the victim.
