The UK government strongly condemned a security breach targeting External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar in London, warning that “any attempt to intimidate and threaten” is unacceptable. The Metropolitan Police acted swiftly after a pro-Khalistani protester attempted to break barricades while others shouted anti-India slogans outside Chatham House, a leading policy institute, on Wednesday.
As Jaishankar emerged from Chatham House, where he had attended an interactive session, a tall protester attempted to breach the police cordon and run toward his motorcade, attempting to block his departure.
Videos circulating on social media showed a small group of Khalistani protesters, waving yellow flags and shouting anti-India slogans from across the road. London police intervened immediately, detaining the individual and preventing any escalation.
A spokesperson from the UK Foreign Office confirmed that authorities had acted swiftly and emphasized that they “strongly condemn the incident.”
India’s Strong Response: Calls for UK to Fulfill Diplomatic Obligations
The Indian Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) responded firmly, emphasizing that such actions violate the principles of diplomatic security.

“We have seen the footage of a breach of security during the visit of the External Affairs Minister to the UK,” said MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal. “We condemn the provocative activities of this small group of separatists and extremists.”
He further stressed, “We deplore the misuse of democratic freedoms by such elements. We expect the host government in such cases to fully live up to their diplomatic obligations.”
Recurring Security Concerns Over Khalistani Extremism in the UK
This is not the first instance of security concerns regarding Khalistani extremists in the UK.
In March 2023, Khalistani elements stormed the Indian High Commission in London, pulling down the Indian national flag, an act that triggered a diplomatic standoff between India and the UK.
Following the attack, India summoned the senior-most British diplomat in Delhi and demanded an explanation over the lack of security at the diplomatic mission.
India has repeatedly urged the UK government to take strict action against Khalistani groups operating from British soil.
Growing Tensions Over Pro-Khalistan Activities in Western Countries
The latest security breach in London highlights India’s ongoing concerns about the influence of Khalistani separatist movements in Western nations.
Similar incidents have occurred in Canada, where Khalistani protests have led to tensions between New Delhi and Ottawa. In Australia, pro-Khalistani groups have vandalized Hindu temples and Indian diplomatic missions.

India’s Diplomatic Stand: A Call for Action Against Extremism
India has consistently maintained that the UK and other Western nations must take firm action against extremist elements who seek to exploit democratic freedoms to incite violence and instability.
With tensions escalating, New Delhi is likely to push for stronger security assurances for Indian officials visiting the UK, ensuring such incidents do not compromise diplomatic relations.
