The Indian counterstrike against Pakistan-based terror camps — Operation Sindoor — was personally named by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, multiple media reports said. The operation, a retaliation for the Pahalgam terror massacre, carries deep symbolic significance and national emotion, drawing from the pain and loss suffered by the victims’ families.
The term sindoor — the vermilion powder worn by Hindu married women as a symbol of marital commitment — evokes the heartbreak caused by the Pahalgam attack, where 26 people were gunned down in cold blood, including 25 Indian men whose wives were left widowed.
The Indian Army’s official visual for the operation depicts the word “Operation Sindoor” in bold letters, with one ‘O’ illustrated as a bowl of vermilion, some of it spilled — symbolising the bloodshed and the broken homes caused by the terrorists. The caption reads, “Justice is served. Jai Hind.”
A Nation Mourns — And Responds
The Pahalgam terror attack crossed multiple red lines. Tourists were targeted, and victims were asked their religion before being shot in front of their wives and children. Images and videos from the tragedy shook the nation — Himanshi Narwal, newly married and wearing her wedding chooda, wept beside the body of Lt. Vinay Narwal; Pallavi Rao begged for help moments after her husband Manjunath was killed; Pragati Jagdale, Sohini Adhikari, Aishanya Dwivedi, and Shital Kalathiya — all became symbols of India’s collective grief.
Survivors and widows of the victims have praised the naming and timing of Operation Sindoor.

PM Modi: “India’s Soul Was Attacked”
Prime Minister Modi, who monitored the strikes in real time, described the Pahalgam attack as one that struck “India’s soul.” In a fiery statement, he declared: “This attack was not just on innocent tourists; the enemies of the country have dared to attack India’s spirit. Now is the time to raze every remnant of the terror haven. The will of 140 crore Indians will break the back of the masters of terror.”
