Chandigarh: In a dramatic turn of events, Navjot Singh Sidhu, a prominent leader of the Congress party in Punjab, launched a scathing attack on the six party lawmakers who cross-voted in the recent Rajya Sabha election.
The cross voting led to and unexpected defeat for the party. Sidhu not only criticised the defectors but also hinted at a potential alliance with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
The loss in the Rajya Sabha has plunged the hill state of Himachal Pradesh, where the Congress had previously secured a victory less than two years ago, into a political crisis. The BJP is now demanding that Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu’s government prove its majority in the 68-member House.

In a statement posted on social media, Navjot Singh Sidhu called for an evaluation of the Congress party’s assets and liabilities following the Himachal Pradesh fiasco. He lambasted the “masqueraders” within the party who he claimed were colluding with agencies like the CBI, ED, and Income Tax Department for personal gain, rather than serving the collective interests of the party
He tweeted, “The Himachal fiasco calls for an assessment of assets and liabilities for The Grand Old Party ??? …. “Masqueraders” on plum posts covertly dancing to the tunes of agencies like CBI, ED and IT have spelt dooms day for us many a times ! The loss is not @DrAMSinghvi Sahb’s but larger….. It is essential to purge the party of those who prioritize personal gain over the collective good, for their actions inflict profound wounds on the party’s very existence….. the wounds might heal but the mental scars will remain…… Their gain is the congress worker’s biggest pain….Loyalty is not everything but the only thing !!!”
Sidhu emphasised the need to cleanse the party of those who prioritize personal gain over the party’s well-being, asserting that such individuals inflict deep wounds on the party’s integrity.
Sidhu’s call to “purge the party” comes amidst a wave of defections from the Congress to the BJP, with several MPs, MLAs, and senior leaders from various states switching sides. This includes former Maharashtra Chief Minister Ashok Chavan, who has joined the BJP, and ex-Union Minister Milind Deora, who has aligned with the BJP’s ally, the Shiv Sena.
