Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday officially entered the electoral fray for the 2024 Lok Sabha election, submitting his nomination from Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh. Accompanied by a prominent entourage comprising senior leaders from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and its alliance partners, Modi embarked on a spirited six-kilometer roadshow the previous evening, showcasing a formidable display of political strength and support.
Among the notable figures accompanying Modi were BJP chief JP Nadda, Home Minister Amit Shah, and Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, alongside other key leaders including Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde and Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma. The presence of alliance partners such as Rashtriya Lok Dal chief Jayant Chaudhary, Lok Janshakti Party leader Chirag Paswan, Apna Dal (Sonelal) leader Anupriya Patel, and Suheldev Bharatiya Samaj Party’s Om Prakash Rajbhar further underscored the coalition’s united front.
Earlier this morning, as part of his nomination filing journey, Modi offered prayers at the revered Dashashwamedh Ghat and visited the Kaal Bhairav Temple, accompanied by Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath. Expressing his profound connection to Varanasi, Modi remarked, “My relationship with my Kashi is amazing, inseparable, and incomparable… it cannot be expressed in words!”
Reflecting on his tenure, Narendra Modi conveyed his sentiments, stating, “I am overwhelmed and emotional! I did not even realize how 10 years passed under the shade of your affection. Aaj Maa Ganga ne mujhe god le liya hai (today, Maa Ganga has adopted me).” Following the filing of his nomination papers, Modi engaged with party workers at the Rudraksh Convention Centre, further galvanizing support for the upcoming electoral battle.
Addressing the overwhelming reception during his roadshow on Monday, Narendra Modi expressed gratitude, emphasizing, “The love and blessings my family members of Kashi showed during the road show became an unforgettable moment in my life.” Varanasi, a BJP stronghold, is witnessing Modi’s bid for a third consecutive term, with the party having secured victory in this constituency eight times since 1991. The only exception to this dominance was in 2004 when RK Mishra of the Congress managed to secure a win.
Varanasi is scheduled to cast its votes in the seventh and final phase of the election on June 1. In the previous 2019 elections, Modi clinched victory by an impressive margin of nearly 4.8 lakh votes, marking a significant increase from his winning margin of 3.72 lakh votes in the preceding election cycle.
