New Delhi: President of India Droupadi Murmu, on the occasion of Women’s Day, today nominated Sudha Murty for Rajya Sabha member. Murty, an educator author and philantrophist, is Chairperson of Infosys Foundation. She is also associated with Bill Gates foundation for public healthcare activities and has set up Murty Classical Library of India at Harvard University. She is wife of Imfosys founder Narayan Murthy and mother in law of British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, while posting on X, said, “I am delighted that the President of India has nominated Smt Sudha Murty Ji to the Rajya Sabha. Sudha Ji’s contributions to diverse fields including social work, philanthropy and education have been immense and inspiring. Her presence in the Rajya Sabha is a powerful testament to our ‘Nari Shakti’, exemplifying the strength and potential of women in shaping our nation’s destiny. Wishing her a fruitful Parliamentary tenure.”

Moments after the PM’s tweet, Tripura CM Manik Saha also congratulated Murthy on X saying, “Heartiest congratulations to Smt. Sudha Murthy Ji, an epitome of Naari Shakti, Eminent Educator, Philanthropist, Author and Padma Bhushan Awardee for being nominated for the Rajya Sabha by Hon’ble President of India. A perfect celebration of #InternationalWomensDay.”

The Manmohan Singh government had given her Padma Shri – the fourth-highest civilian award in India in 2006 for contributions in the society. She was also awarded Padma Bhusan in 2003 by Atal Bihari Vajpayee government.
It may be noted that the President of India enjoys power to nominate 12 people members to the Rajya Sabha, also known as Upper House of the Parliament for their exemplary contributions towards arts, literature, sciences, and social services.
Murty began her professional career in computer science and engineering. In her decades long social life, she has founded several orphanages, participated in rural development efforts, supported the movement to provide all Karnataka government schools with computer and library facilities, and established Murty Classical Library of India at Harvard University. Murty is also known for her philanthropy and her contribution to literature in Kannada and English. Dollar Bahu a novel originally authored by her in Kannada and later translated into English as Dollar Bahu, was adapted as a televised dramatic series by Zee TV in 2001. Runa, a story by Sudha Murthy was adapted as a Marathi film, Pitruroon.
