New Delhi: On the occasion of International Women’s Day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi today announced a cut of Rs 100 in cooking gas prices. Prime Minister, while announcing the move said that this the line of commitment of his government to empower women and ensure ease of living for them.
Taking X PM Modi said, “Today, on Women’s Day, our Government has decided to reduce LPG cylinder prices by Rs 100. This will significantly ease the financial burden on millions of households across the country, especially benefiting our Nari Shakti.”

He also wrote, “By making cooking gas more affordable, we also aim to support the well-being of families and ensure a healthier environment. This is in line with our commitment to empowering women and ensuring ‘Ease of Living’ for them.”
On the occasion, the PM also greeted women saying, “Greetings on International Women’s Day. We salute the strength, courage, and resilience of our Nari Shakti and laud their accomplishments across various fields. Our government is committed to empowering women through initiatives in education, entrepreneurship, agriculture, technology and more. This is also reflected in our accomplishments in the last decade.”

Earlier on Thursday, the Union Cabined had decided to continue targeted subsidy of Rs 300 to PM Ujjwala Yojana Consumers. The Union Cabinet meeting, chaired by the Prime Minister, had decided to extend the subsidy on cooking gas for 2024-25 by one year till March 2025. The announcement to this effect was made by Union Minister Piyush Goel after the meeting. The government had informed that a whopping 10.27 crore beneficiaries under Ujjawala Yogana will be eligible to avail subsidies on 12 cylinders every year as the subsidy amount will be credited directly in their accounts. The government had also informed to bear entire cost of it which will be around Rs 12,000 crore for a year period.
The Centre, in October last year, had increased the subsidy to Rs 300 from Rs 200 for per 14.2-kg cylinders for up to 12 refills per year and the subsidy was till March 31.
The Narendra Modi-led government, in 2016, had started Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY) to provide LPG connections to five crore women members of below-poverty line (BPL) households in the first phase. The scheme was expanded in April 2018 to include women beneficiaries from seven more categories (SC/ST, PMAY, AAY, Most backward classes, tea garden, forest dwellers, Islands). In the second phase, the target was expanded to eight crore LPG connections.
