India Pakistan Indus water treaty suspended: In a firm response to the recent terror attack targeting civilians in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, India on Wednesday announced a set of sweeping diplomatic and strategic countermeasures directed at Pakistan.
Key 1960 water treaty between India and Pakistan suspended
The most significant move is the indefinite suspension of the decades-old “Indus Waters Treaty”, a landmark agreement signed in 1960. Under this treaty, India has allowed the flow of water from the Indus River system — including the Jhelum, Chenab, Ravi, Beas, and Sutlej rivers — into Pakistan. With the suspension, this critical water supply, which sustains tens of millions in Pakistan, will be halted.
The treaty, brokered by the World Bank, had withstood multiple conflicts between India and Pakistan, including the wars of 1965, 1971, and 1999. Its suspension marks an unprecedented shift in bilateral relations.
Announcing the decision, Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri stated:
“During the CCS briefing, evidence of cross-border involvement in the terrorist attack was presented. It was observed that this heinous act came at a time when Jammu and Kashmir had successfully concluded elections and was making consistent progress towards economic growth and development.”

Government announces 5 major actions against Pakistan
Describing the move as a “decisive response to cross-border terrorism,” the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) outlined five major actions:
-
Suspension of Indus Waters Cooperation:
India has halted the Indus Waters Treaty, under which approximately 39 billion cubic meters of water from the Indus River system flows into Pakistan each year. Long regarded as a rare example of cooperation despite decades of hostility, the treaty’s suspension marks a major shift in bilateral relations. -
Closure of the Attari-Wagah Border:
The Attari-Wagah border crossing—an essential link for trade and cross-border civilian interaction—has been shut with immediate effect. -
Ban on Entry of Pakistani Nationals:
India has indefinitely suspended the entry of Pakistani citizens. This includes the halting of visa services and all forms of cross-border travel permits. -
Expulsion of Military Advisors:
All military officials posted at the Pakistan High Commission in New Delhi have been expelled, signaling a significant downgrade in military-diplomatic engagement. -
Reduction of Diplomatic Presence (implied from earlier context):
The staff strength at the Pakistan High Commission is to be brought down to 30 personnel, further curtailing bilateral engagement at the diplomatic level.
These measures underscore India’s intent to hold Pakistan accountable for continued cross-border terrorism and to send a clear message on the consequences of supporting such acts.
