Minnesota Lawmaker Killed In ‘Targeted’ Attack | In a chilling incident that has rocked the political community, two Minnesota lawmakers were shot in an early Saturday attack that officials are calling “targeted and deliberate.” State Senator John Hoffman was wounded, while Representative Melissa Hortman and her husband were killed at their suburban homes in Champlin and Brooklyn Park, sparking a massive manhunt and shelter-in-place orders across the area.
Authorities believe the suspect impersonated a law enforcement officer to gain access to the lawmakers’ homes. “The suspect was operating a vehicle that looked exactly like an SUV squad car,” said Police Chief Mark Bruley, adding that the vehicle had emergency lights and closely resembled a real police cruiser.
“This individual exploited the trust that our uniforms represent,” said Public Safety Commissioner Bob Johnson. “That betrayal is deeply disturbing to those of us who wear the badge with honor and responsibility.”
Trump, FBI, and State Leaders Respond as Search for Gunman Intensifies
A manifesto recovered from the suspect’s vehicle has heightened concern, naming other lawmakers and public officials as potential targets. The FBI is assisting in the investigation, with Attorney General Pam Bondi confirming that federal agents are on the ground.

President Donald Trump described the attack as “terrible” and assured the nation that such violence “will not be tolerated.” Minnesota Governor Tim Walz condemned the shootings and urged a united stand against political violence: “Those responsible for this will be held accountable.”
The victims include Melissa Hortman, a prominent Democratic leader who had served since 2004 and was known for her influence in state politics. Her husband also died from gunshot wounds, according to Drew Evans, superintendent of the Bureau of Criminal Apprehension.
John Hoffman, who survived the attack, is a veteran lawmaker who has represented Minnesota in the state Senate since 2012. He is also the founder of a consulting firm and a former vice chair of the Anoka-Hennepin School Board.
As of now, the suspect remains at large, and a full-scale search is underway. Authorities are urging residents of Champlin and Brooklyn Park to remain indoors as investigations continue.
