In response to the Calcutta High Court’s decision to scrap the jobs of 26,000 teachers, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Wednesday lambasted the BJP, CPI(M) and Congress. She vehemently rejected any support for the BJP, CPI(M), or Congress, rallying against what she perceives as judicial bias.
Addressing a rally ahead of the Lok Sabha elections, Mamata Banerjee said, “Not one vote for the BJP or CPM or Congress, not from teachers, not from any government worker.”
The cancellation of the 2016 teacher recruitment process has left almost 26,000 educators unemployed, prompting protests and accusations of by Mamata Banerjee and her party TMC which called it an unjust repercussion for the actions of a few.
The NDTV further quoted Mamata Banerjee as saying, “They (the BJP) have bought the High Court. They have bought the CBI. They have bought the NIA. They have bought the BSF. They have bought the CAPF. They have turned the colour of Doordarshan saffron — they will only talk about the BJP and Modi ka baat. Don’t watch it. Boycott it,”
The Supreme Court’s pending decision on the matter will undoubtedly influence the political landscape in West Bengal, where both the ruling Trinamool Congress and the opposition BJP are vying for electoral advantage.
In a notable turn of events, the Calcutta High Court on April 22 declared the State Level Selection Test-2016 (SLST) recruitment process for West Bengal government-sponsored and aided schools null and void.
This decision affects 25,753 individuals employed as teachers, who now face job loss and must repay the salaries they’ve received since their appointment, along with a 12 percent interest, as per the court’s order.
The court’s ruling not only invalidates all appointments made through the SLST-2016 but also mandates further investigation into the appointment process by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).
A division bench comprising justices Debangsu Basak and Md Shabbar Rashidi issued this directive, requiring the CBI to submit its findings within three months. Moreover, the West Bengal School Service Commission has been tasked with initiating a fresh appointment process, signaling a significant setback for the state’s education system.
