This comes after yet another raid at Chatterjee’s aide’s apartment on Wednesday by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) unearthed around Rs 29 crore in cash and five kilograms of gold jewellery.
Kolkata: Five days after his arrest, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Thursday sacked Partha Chatterjee from the West Bengal cabinet and suspended him from all posts of the party. According to sources, he may soon be sacked from the party.
This comes after yet another raid at Chatterjee’s aide’s apartment on Wednesday by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) unearthed around Rs 29 crore in cash and five kilograms of gold jewellery. The raid was a part of the ongoing investigation into the alleged school jobs scam.
The ED officials had reached the Belgharia house of Arpita Mukherjee on Wednesday and left after almost 18 hours with 10 trunks. According to officials, three note counting machines were used to ascertain the exact amount.
Both Partha and Arpita were arrested on July 23 after large amount of cash was seized from the duo’s homes. Last week, the sleuths of the central agency had unearthed Rs 21 crore in cash, a huge amount of foreign exchange and gold bars worth Rs 2 crore from Arpita’s apartment.
The ED also found a 40-page diary that may provide crucial leads. Arpita has reportedly told the ED that the money was the kickback received for transfers and for helping colleges get recognition.
A day after Partha’s arrest, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had said that she does not support corruption by any of the party leaders. Distancing herself from Partha Chatterjee, she said that the BJP is wrong if it thinks that it can break her party using the central agencies.
On Sunday, the ED had told Calcutta High Court that Partha Chatterjee is behaving like a ‘don’ in the hospital. Hours after the arrest on Saturday, the minister had complained some health problems and was taken to the SSKM Hospital by the probe agency.
