The mother of the trainee doctor who was raped and murdered at RG Kar Medical College has accused West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee of lying about not offering financial compensation to the family. This allegation directly contradicts the Chief Minister’s earlier statement.
On Monday, ANI quoted the victim’s mother who vehemently refuted Mamata Banerjee’s claim, asserting that the CM had indeed offered financial compensation after her daughter’s tragic death.
“The Chief Minister is lying. My daughter will not return. Would I lie in her name? The Chief Minister told us that we would receive money and suggested that we create something in our daughter’s memory. I responded that I would come to her office to collect the money once my daughter gets justice,” said the bereaved mother.
This came after Mamata Banerjee publicly denied offering any financial assistance to the family of the deceased doctor earlier in the day. Addressing the allegations, the Chief Minister stated, “I have never offered money to the doctor’s family. This is nothing but slander. I only told the doctor’s parents that if they wished to do something in their daughter’s memory, our government would support them.”

Mamata Banerjee also revealed that Kolkata Commissioner of Police, Vineet Goyal, had offered his resignation following protests at RG Kar Medical College, but she rejected it, citing the upcoming Durga Puja as a critical period requiring his leadership in law and order.
Family Members Continue to Hold CM Responsible
The victim’s cousin backed the mother’s claim, stating that the Chief Minister herself had offered financial compensation. “The Chief Minister herself offered financial compensation. She denied that money was offered by the police. I’m still saying with responsibility that the Chief Minister offered money,” the cousin said.
In response to Mamata Banerjee’s call for a return to festivities as Durga Puja nears, the victim’s mother expressed her disbelief, calling the request “inhuman.” She said, “Durga Puja is celebrated in my house too; my daughter used to handle it herself. But Durga Puja will never be celebrated in my house again. The light in my home is out. How can I ask people to return to the festival?”

She further questioned the Chief Minister’s stance, asking, “If such an incident had happened in the Chief Minister’s family, would she have said this?”
The grieving mother also vowed to continue seeking justice for her daughter, maintaining that they would not stop until justice is served.
Supreme Court Weighs In
Amid the turmoil, the Supreme Court stepped in on Monday, reminding authorities that no action should be taken against doctors who return to work by Tuesday at 5 pm. This was in relation to the ongoing case of the trainee doctor’s rape and murder.
However, the court also warned that if the doctors failed to return to work by the set deadline, it could not prevent the state government from taking disciplinary action.
The tragic incident of the second-year postgraduate medical student’s rape and murder on August 9 inside RG Kar Medical College’s seminar hall has sparked widespread protests across Kolkata, demanding justice and raising questions about the state’s handling of the case.
As the Durga Puja festival approaches, tensions remain high, with both the family and protestors determined to continue their fight for justice, despite calls for normalcy.
