The Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) wrapped up their TATA Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 stint on a high note with an 18-run victory against the Mumbai Indians (MI) at the Wankhede Stadium.

MI, who won the toss and opted to bowl, made several changes to their lineup, notably bringing in Arjun Tendulkar in place of Jasprit Bumrah.

LSG’s innings was a tale of two halves. Struggling to gain momentum in the first 10 overs, they faced regular wickets falling, which kept the MI bowlers in control. Devdutt Padikkal, promoted to open, was trapped leg-before by Nuwan Thushara in the very first over. Marcus Stoinis got off to a promising start, scoring 28 off 22 balls, before being trapped leg-before by Piyush Chawla. By the halfway mark, LSG were 69 for three, with Nicholas Pooran stepping in to stabilize the innings.

Pooran initially played cautiously but soon unleashed a flurry of shots, reaching his fifty off just 19 balls. His explosive batting included hitting sixes off Arjun Tendulkar, who had to leave the field due to cramping, and his replacement, Naman Dhir. Pooran’s innings of 75 off 29 balls propelled LSG to a challenging total, supported by a half-century from KL Rahul.

Contributions from Krunal Pandya and Ayush Badoni towards the end helped LSG post a formidable 214.

MI’s chase started strongly with an 88-run opening partnership between Rohit Sharma and Dewald Brevis. Rohit played a brilliant knock, reaching his fifty off 28 balls and scoring 68 before being dismissed by Ravi Bishnoi. Brevis, who scored 23, was the first to fall, which triggered a collapse. Suryakumar Yadav and Rohit’s wickets in quick succession left MI struggling.

Despite a valiant effort from Naman Dhir, who scored an unbeaten 62 off 28 balls, MI fell short. LSG’s bowlers, led by Krunal Pandya with a spell of one for 29 and Ravi Bishnoi with two for 37, managed to keep the run rate in check, ultimately securing an 18-run victory for their team.

The victory marked a positive end to LSG’s IPL 2024 campaign, showcasing strong performances from their key players and a collective effort in both batting and bowling departments.
