Following the outcome of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections which left the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) without an outright majority, the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) and key partners within INDIA are set to engage in crucial deliberations today to muster the numbers necessary to establish a government.
Securing 294 seats in the 543-member Parliament, the BJP-led NDA fell short of the absolute majority mark by 22 seats. Meanwhile, the INDIA Opposition bloc, comprising various parties, clinched 234 seats, leaving them 38 shy of the majority threshold.
Notably, the fate of government formation now hinges on the support of two pivotal figures: Chandrababu Naidu of the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) and Nitish Kumar of the Janata Dal (United) [JDU].
While Naidu and Kumar contested the elections as part of the NDA coalition alongside the BJP, reports indicate that INDIA leaders are actively reaching out to veteran politicians in a bid to sway them toward the Opposition bloc.
With the arithmetic of parliamentary seats in mind, INDIA necessitates the backing of both JDU and TDP, along with several unaffiliated MPs, to secure a majority.

Post-election, leaders from both the NDA and INDIA alliances are converging in Delhi to chart the course ahead. Interestingly, Nitish Kumar, known for his political flexibility, shared a flight with Tejashwi Yadav, an ally of INDIA and leader of the Rashtriya Janata Dal [RJD], as they journeyed to Delhi for separate meetings.
KC Tyagi, a close associate of Nitish Kumar and a prominent figure in JDU, affirmed yesterday that the party remains committed to the NDA and dismissed any conjecture regarding a potential switch to the INDIA bloc.
Meanwhile, Chandrababu Naidu, the other key player, extended congratulations to Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the NDA’s commendable performance in Andhra Pradesh, signaling a desire for continued collaboration between TDP and BJP to rejuvenate the state.

However, it’s imperative to acknowledge the history of criticism both Kumar and Naidu have directed towards Prime Minister Modi and the BJP in the past. Notably, Kumar previously spearheaded discussions aimed at forming an opposition coalition to counter the BJP before making a last-minute reversal.
The pivotal meeting in the national capital will witness the presence of prominent INDIA leaders including Akhilesh Yadav, Tejashwi Yadav, Uddhav Thackeray, Sharad Pawar, and MK Stalin. Simultaneously, representatives from the NDA camp such as Nitish Kumar, Chandrababu Naidu, Eknath Shinde, Jitan Ram Manjhi, Pawan Kalyan, Chirag Paswan, and HD Kumaraswamy are slated to attend, underscoring the high stakes and intricate negotiations characterizing the post-election landscape.
