Ranchi: Hours after death of a minor girl who was burnt alive by her stalker in Jharkhand’s Dumka, massive protests have erupted in the state. The 16-year-old girl was killed by stalker Shahrukh Hussain by putting petrol during the wee hours when she was sleeping in her bedroom.
The school girl had informed her parents about harassment faced by Shahrukh in the past. On the fateful night, she had discussed the same with her father and had gone to sleep. After a few hours of sleep, she realised pain in her body and woke up. She realised that her body had been set on fire by Shahrukh.
After facing severe burn injuries, she was taken to the nearby hospital in the city and later to a Ranchi hospital where she succumbed to her injuries. The accused was identified with the help of CCTV footage and was arrested by the local police.
The girl, in her statement before she succumbed, said that she had told her father about the harassment and her father had assured to talk to the stalker Shahrukh’s family. “On Tuesday night, after having our dinner, we went to sleep. I was sleeping in another room. On Tuesday morning, I experienced a sensation of pain on my back and could smell something burning. I found him running away when I opened my eyes. I started screaming in pain and went to my father’s room. My parents doused the fire and took me to the hospital,” she said in her last statement. The girl, in her statement, also named another accused Chhotu Khan who has reportedly been arrested by the police and being interrogated.
Meanwhile, the incident caused massive anger among the people of the state. In many cities including her native town and state capital, people staged protests demanding severe punishment for the accused persons.
Senior Jharkhand BJP leader Babulal Marandi tweeted, “According to reports, DSP Noor Mustafa tried to save the accused Shahrukh Hussain from the beginning in the case of Ankita’s burning in Dumka. In the FIR, the matter of getting an adult written in place of a minor is coming in the news. There is huge resentment among the people of the entire state including Dumka against the DSP and the people living there do not expect justice. Chief Minister Hemant Soren ji, before the matter gets worse, register an FIR against this conspirator DSP Noor Mustafa and send him to jail.”
Amid pressure from all sections demanding justice to the deceased’s family, Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren tweeted, “Heartfelt tribute to Ankita daughter. Ankita’s family members have been instructed to fast track the execution of this heinous incident with the help of Rs 10 lakh. The Director General of Police has also been directed to give an early report on the progress of research by the ADG rank officer in the said case.”
