New Delhi: A Delhi court has denied bail to eight accused in connection with the Jahangirpuri violence during procession on the occasion of Hanuman Jayanti in April. The court also observed prima facie ‘failure’ on part of the police for not stopping the procession on the occasion of Hanuman Jayanti as it was being carried out without proper permission.

The court refused to grant bail to accused persons namely Imteyaz, Noor Alam, Shiekh Hamid, Ahmad Ali, Sheikh Hamid, SK Shahada, Sheikh Zakir and Ahir. It said that identification of arrested accused has been done on the basis of CCTV footage and even by eyewitnesses of the incident.

Observing police’s ‘failure’, the court said that it seems that the police instead of stopping a procession which was being carried out without permission was accompanying them to the entire route which later witnessed an unfortunate riot between the two communities.

On April 16, a clash broke out between members of two communities after a procession taken out to mark Mahavir Jayanti was allegedly pelted with stones at Delhi’s Jahangirpuri area on Saturday evening. The clash left several people injured, including six policemen.

A day after the incident, Delhi Police had arrested 23 persons for their involvement in stone pelting and firing over policemen and civilians. Police had claimed to have arrested accused Aslam who shot at Delhi Police sub-inspector Medalal Meena and recovered a country-made pistol from his possession. Ansar, a main accused for instigating people for firing and stone pelting on people participating in Mahavir Jayanti procession, was also arrested by the police. He had brought a few people with him and started arguments with procession members near the mosque area.

On April 23, A Delhi court had sent five of the prime accused facing charges under the stringent National Security Act (NSA) into eight days’ police custody. The accused, Ansar, Sonu, Salim, Dilshad, and Ahir, were in police custody since their arrest and the law enforcement agency later imposed charges against them under the NSA.
