Jahangirpuri Violence: 20, including key accused, held; Police organise peace meeting

New Delhi: A day after violence in Jahangirpuri, Delhi Police on Sunday arrested 20 persons for their involvement in stone pelting and firing over policemen and civilians. According to the reports, police have also apprehended two minors in connection with the violence. Clashes broke out between members of two communities after a procession took out to mark Mahavir Jayanti on Saturday evening.

Police have claimed to arrest accused Aslam who shot at Delhi Police sub-inspector Medalal Meena and has recovered a country-made pistol from his possession. Ansar, considered to be a main accused for instigating people for firing and stone pelting on people participating in Mahavir Jayanti procession, has also been arrested by the police. He also brought a few people with his and started arguments with procession members near the mosque area.

Police are looking for another accused who shot bullets over policemen and civilians. His video of firing surfaced on Sunday afternoon following which police are trying to identify him. Police produced 14 accused, who were arrested early morning, at a local court. Two accused were sent to police custody while the remaining 12 were sent to judicial custody.

BJP Councillor from Adarsh Nagar area, Garima Gupta, alleged hands of Bangladeshi immigrants in violence which caused injury to nearly half dozen policemen besides a few civilians.
