In a significant development, the American Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) missile defence system successfully intercepted a ballistic missile launched at Israel from Yemen. The interception of the missile, reportedly fired by the Iran-backed Houthi rebels, marked the first operational use of the THAAD system in Israel since its deployment by the United States in October.
The missile interception occurred amid escalating regional tensions. Footage widely circulated on social media captured the moment the THAAD system launched an interceptor, accompanied by the exclamation of an American soldier: “Eighteen years I’ve been waiting for this.”

While the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) confirmed the successful interception, they refrained from specifying whether the system used was Israeli or American. However, reports from security sources and the Times of Israel suggest that THAAD played a pivotal role in neutralising the threat.
Deployment of THAAD in Israel
The deployment of THAAD in Israel followed an October 1 ballistic missile attack by Iran. The advanced system, developed by the United States, is engineered to intercept short-, medium-, and intermediate-range ballistic missiles during their terminal phase. Unlike traditional systems, THAAD relies on kinetic energy to destroy incoming threats through impact, eliminating the need for an explosive warhead.

A standard THAAD battery includes six truck-mounted launchers, each capable of holding up to eight interceptors, alongside a radar and a fire control system. Its radar can detect threats from a range of 870 to 3,000 kilometres, offering a robust layer of defence against missile attacks.
Escalation of Houthi Attacks
The missile launch by the Houthis is the fifth such attack on Israel in just eight days. The Iran-backed group claimed the missile targeted Ben Gurion Airport. In response, Israeli warplanes conducted retaliatory strikes on Houthi positions in Yemen, including infrastructure at Sanaa International Airport and the Hezyaz power plant.
Over the past year, the Houthis have launched more than 200 missiles and 170 drones at Israel, according to the IDF. Most of these threats were intercepted or fell short of their targets. The group has also disrupted commercial shipping in the Red Sea, targeting over 100 merchant vessels and forcing carriers to reroute.
Connection to Gaza Conflict
The Houthis have explicitly linked their actions to the ongoing conflict in Gaza, which escalated on October 7, 2023, following an attack on Israel by Palestinian group Hamas. The regional fallout from the Gaza conflict has intensified hostilities, drawing in multiple actors and raising concerns over broader instability in the region.
The successful interception underscores the capabilities of the THAAD system in addressing advanced missile threats. As regional tensions continue to rise, the deployment and operational success of such advanced defence systems highlight their strategic importance in maintaining stability and safeguarding national security.
