Their emphatic 18-run win over the Mumbai Indians (MI) on home turf not only marked their ninth victory of the season but also solidified their position at the top of the points table.
The match, scheduled for a full 20 overs, was truncated to a 16-over contest due to persistent rain in the evening. Opting to field after winning the toss, MI faced a spirited start from KKR’s opener, Phil Salt, who launched the innings with a massive six off Nuwan Thushara. However, Salt’s aggression was short-lived as he fell victim to a catch in the deep in the same over.
Jasprit Bumrah further dented KKR’s progress by dismissing Sunil Narine with a peach of a delivery that shattered the stumps. Despite the early setbacks, Venkatesh Iyer showcased resilience with a blistering innings, punctuated by aggressive strokes, including two fours and a six off Bumrah’s over.
KKR’s innings witnessed a lack of substantial partnerships, but crucial contributions from the likes of Venkatesh Iyer, Andre Russell, and Nitish Rana propelled them to a competitive total of 157 for seven. In pursuit of the target, MI’s Ishan Kishan provided a fiery start with a quickfire 37 off just 17 balls.
However, KKR’s spinners, led by Sunil Narine and Varun Chakaravarthy, staged a remarkable comeback, picking up crucial wickets to stifle MI’s momentum. Despite a valiant effort from Tilak Varma and Naman Dhir in the latter stages of the innings, MI fell short as KKR’s bowlers maintained their composure to secure victory.
Harshit Rana emerged as the hero for Kolkata Knight Riders, delivering a decisive final over to extinguish MI’s hopes of a miraculous comeback. With this win, Kolkata Knight Riders reinforced their dominance in the tournament and left their home ground with an impressive record of five victories in seven matches, much to the delight of the fervent Eden Gardens crowd.
