In a thrilling TATA IPL 2024 opener at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai, defending champions Chennai Super Kings (CSK) secured a six-wicket victory over Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) through a stellar all-round performance.
Mustafizur Rahman’s remarkable spell of 4/29, complemented by exceptional fielding, saw CSK restrict RCB to 173/6. Making his IPL debut, Rachin Ravindra showcased his prowess with a rapid 37 off 15 balls, contributing to CSK’s successful chase.
Despite losing captain Ruturaj Gaikwad early in the chase, CSK maintained momentum, with Gaikwad and Ravindra forming a promising 38-run partnership. However, Ravindra’s dismissal to Karn Sharma saw a brief setback before Daryl Mitchell’s explosive batting propelled CSK to 92/2 at the halfway mark.
Cameron Green’s introduction into the attack resulted in another wicket for RCB, dismissing Ajinkya Rahane, but Mitchell and Shivam Dube’s formidable partnership of 95 runs from 50 balls solidified CSK’s position. Eventually, CSK reached the target with eight balls to spare, sealing a memorable victory in the tournament’s opening match.
