Umar Ansari, the son of the gangster-turned-politician Mukhtar Ansari who died on Thursday following a cardiac arrest, has alleged that his father was subjected to slow poisoning.
However, authorities have refuted these allegations. According to reports, Mukhtar Ansari was transferred to Rani Durgavati Medical College in Banda from the district jail in an unconscious state and the hospital’s principal, Suneel Kaushal, confirmed that Ansari passed away at the hospital due to cardiac arrest.
“I was not told anything from the administration side, I came to know about it through the media… But now the whole nation knows everything… Two days ago I came to meet him, but I was not allowed… We said earlier also and even today we will say the same about the allegation of giving slow poison. On March 19, he was poisoned at dinner. We will move to the judiciary, we have full faith in it…” said Umar Ansari, according to news agency ANI.
Mukhtar Ansari, aged 63, served as a five-time MLA from Mau Sadar. He had been incarcerated in Uttar Pradesh and Punjab since 2005, with more than 60 criminal cases pending against him. Ansari was convicted in eight cases between September 2022 and the time of his death by various courts in Uttar Pradesh. He was detained in Banda jail.

Furthermore, Ansari’s name was included in the list of 66 gangsters issued by the Uttar Pradesh Police last year. Talking to the media, his son Umar Ansari disclosed that his father had informed them about being subjected to “slow poison,” a concern that has garnered national attention. Additionally, Mukhtar Ansari’s brother and Ghazipur MP Afzal Ansari had also voiced similar allegations earlier this week.
On Friday morning, a crowd had gathered at Mukhtar Ansari’s residence, where a significant number of security personnel were deployed both around the house and the hospital premises. Mukhtar Ansari’s elder brother, Sibgatullah Ansari, expressed concern over the delay in the postmortem process, stating that they were anticipating it to be conducted overnight with the expectation of receiving the body in the morning.
Addressing the media, Sibgatullah Ansari, Mukhtar Ansari’s elder brothers said ‘We don’t have any information about when the postmortem will be done. We were hoping that the postmortem would be done in the night itself and the body would be handed over to us in the morning. I don’t understand why the administration is delaying it,”.
Mukhtar Ansari, who hailed from Mau, was known to wield considerable influence in the adjacent districts of Ghazipur and Varanasi as well. According to a medical bulletin, he was admitted to the medical college around 8:25 pm on Thursday in an unconscious state after experiencing vomiting. Despite efforts by a team of nine doctors, he succumbed to cardiac arrest, it said. Officials at the police headquarters in Lucknow stated that Ansari’s postmortem would be conducted in Banda and recorded on video.
On Thursday, Uttar Pradesh Director General of Police Prashant Kumar announced the imposition of prohibitory orders under Section 144 of the CrPC across the state. Additionally, teams comprising the Central Reserve Police Force, in collaboration with local police units, were deployed in Banda, Mau, Ghazipur, and Varanasi districts. The social media cell of the Uttar Pradesh Police has been mobilized to monitor online activities and identify any unlawful elements.
