New Delhi: Ahead of the impending Lok Sabha election, the former President Ram Nath Kovind-led high-level committee on Thursday morning submitted its report on the ‘One Nation One Election’. The report was presented to President Droupadi Murmu.
The concept of ‘One Nation One Election’ revolves around the idea of holding simultaneous elections nationwide. It proposes conducting elections for both the Lok Sabha and all state assemblies concurrently.
In India, the general elections to select members of Parliament and state Assembly polls are typically held separately when the term of the current government concludes or is dissolved for various reasons.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has long been an advocate for the One Nation, One Election initiative.
Other members of the panel, alongside Kovind, include Union Home Minister Amit Shah, former leader of the opposition in the Rajya Sabha Ghulam Nabi Azad, former chairman of the finance commission N K Singh, former Lok Sabha secretary general Subhash Kashyap and senior advocate Harish Salve.
