New Delhi: Climate activist and innovator Sonam Wangchuk, who was on a hunger strike, concluded his 21-day strike in Ladakh on Tuesday.
Wangchuk, who staged the hunger strike in Leh, Ladakh, advocating for statehood for the region and its incorporation into the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution, addressed a sizable crowd at the protest site as he broke his fast by accepting a glass of juice from a young girl.
In a tweet, Wangchuk said, “I’ll be back…7000 people gathered today. It was the end of the 1st leg of my fast. Btw 21 days was the longest fast Gandhi ji kept.
From tomorrow women’s groups of Ladakh will take it forward with a 10 Days fast, then the youth, then the monks from monasteries… then me again n so on. The journey has only started. But we still hope n trust we won’t have to do all this.”

“The first phase of the hunger strike is ending today but this is not the end of the agitation,” news agency PTI quoted Wangchuk as saying.
Emphasizing that this marks the inception of a new phase in their ongoing campaign, Sonam Wangchuk, renowned for his contributions to education reform, reaffirmed their commitment to the cause.
“We will continue our struggle (in support of our demands). The gathering of 10,000 people at the venue and participation of over 60,000 others over the past 20 days are a testimony of the people’s aspirations,” the India Today quoted Sonam Wangchuk as saying.
Earlier in the day, Wangchuk utilized social media to reiterate his plea to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah, urging them to safeguard the Himalayas and implement the Sixth Schedule in Ladakh for the protection of indigenous tribes.
In a post shared online, Wangchuk highlighted the endurance of the protesters, with 350 individuals enduring sub-zero temperatures overnight and 5000 gathering during the day, yet lamented the absence of acknowledgment from the government.
Furthermore, Sonam Wangchuk urged citizens to exercise their voting rights judiciously in the forthcoming Lok Sabha elections for the betterment of the nation, emphasizing the importance of selecting leaders with integrity, foresight, and wisdom.
