In a significant political move, Nitish Kumar, the Chief Minister of Bihar, solidified his support for Narendra Modi for third term as Prime Minister during a meeting of the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance’s newly-elected MPs on Friday. This endorsement underscores Kumar’s earlier shift from the opposition bloc to aligning with the BJP, a move that earned him the moniker ‘paltu Kumar’.
Taking a dig at his former allies, Kumar criticized the opposition group, stating they “have not done any work for the country”. His declaration of unwavering support for Narendra Modi was aimed at dispelling speculations regarding his allegiance following the election results, where his party, Janata Dal (United), along with Chandrababu Naidu’s TDP, emerged as crucial kingmakers.
With the BJP falling short of a majority with only 240 seats, Kumar’s JDU and Naidu’s TDP’s combined 28 seats become pivotal for the BJP to form and sustain the government. However, the rest of the NDA holds only 25 seats, insufficient to secure a majority independently.

Speculation about a potential reunion between Kumar and the opposition bloc arose after it became evident that the BJP wouldn’t secure a majority on its own. However, Kumar remained ambiguous, leaving room for negotiation regarding ministerial allocations. Sources close to Kumar indicated his discontent over delays in his appointment as the Convenor of the opposition bloc, which ultimately led to his departure.
Despite maintaining silence on these matters, Kumar’s demands for two cabinet and a junior Union Minister berth, along with a common minimum program, have been communicated to the BJP. The JDU also eyes the Railways Minister post, previously held by Kumar.
As political maneuvers and negotiations continue, Kumar’s endorsement of Modi signals a significant alliance formation, setting the stage for the government’s structure and policy agenda in the coming term.
