New Delhi: The Income Tax Department has issued a notice amounting to Rs 1,700 crore to the Congress party, which includes penalties and interest for the assessment years spanning from 2017-18 to 2020-21.
The notice comes on the heels of the Delhi High Court’s rejection of Congress’ appeals against tax reassessment proceedings initiated by the Income Tax department.
Confirmation of the development was provided by Congress leader Vivek Tankha.
The Delhi High Court dismissed petitions filed by the Congress challenging the commencement of tax reassessment proceedings covering a four-year period by tax authorities. Additionally, the party’s challenge to the initiation of tax reassessment proceedings for the assessment years 2014-15 to 2016-17 was also dismissed last week.
A bench comprising Justices Yashwant Varma and Purushaindra Kumar Kaurav upheld its previous decision declining to interfere with the opening of reassessment for another year.
This development follows the Congress party’s recent statement regarding the freezing of their bank accounts, hindering their ability to conduct campaign activities.
Rahul Gandhi, in a press conference, lamented, “All our bank accounts have been frozen. We can do no campaign work, we cannot support our workers, we cannot support our candidates. Our leaders cannot travel from one part of the country to the other. We’re unable to put out our ads.” Gandhi highlighted that this action has occurred just two months before the election campaign.
Furthermore, Gandhi accused the Election Commission of inaction, alleging that the quantum amount involved in the notices dated back to the 90s and six to seven years ago. He emphasized that the amount, initially stated as Rs 14 lakh, posed a significant threat to the party’s financial stability.
