New Delhi: In a significant milestone for India’s sustainable development journey, the Union Minister for Steel and Civil Aviation, Jyotiraditya M Scindia, virtually inaugurated India’s first Green Hydrogen Plant in the Stainless Steel Sector.
The inauguration saw the presence of key dignitaries including Secretary, Ministry of Steel Nagendra Nath Sinha, Managing Director of Jindal Stainless Limited, Abhyuday Jindal, and Founder of Hygenco, Amit Bansal, alongside other officials from the Ministry of Steel.
Commitment to a Green and Sustainable Future
In his address, Union Minister Scindia underscored India’s unwavering commitment to a green and sustainable future, particularly emphasizing the imperative for responsible economic progress in the post-COVID era. He reiterated India’s dedication to contributing to global environmental goals, emphasizing the nation’s pivotal role in the global effort to combat climate change.
India Emerging as a Global Green Leader
Highlighting India’s rich environmental heritage and its modern strategies for environmental conservation, Minister Scindia outlined the country’s proactive measures in tackling climate change. Initiatives such as the Panchamrit and Mission LiFE exemplify India’s holistic approach to development, balancing environmental preservation with economic prosperity.

Jyotiraditya Scindia emphasized the government’s encouragement of “green growth” and “green jobs” to achieve the ambitious target of net-zero carbon emissions by 2070.
National Green Hydrogen Mission Transforms Steel Industry
Minister Scindia also spotlighted India’s strides in the steel sector, transforming from a net importer to a net exporter and aiming to become the world’s largest producer of crude steel. He cited the National Green Hydrogen Mission (NGHM) as a pivotal initiative, aimed at making India a global hub for green hydrogen production, usage, and export. The mission, backed by substantial funding, is supporting pilot projects in the steel sector to facilitate a transition towards sustainable practices.
Industry Transformation and Green Hydrogen Milestone
Commending Hygenco and Jindal Stainless for commissioning India’s first long-term off-take green hydrogen plant, Jyotiraditya Scindia hailed the project as a significant step towards a cleaner and sustainable future. He emphasized its alignment with the government’s vision and its potential to create employment opportunities while urging industry stakeholders to adopt clean technologies.
Government’s Readiness for Green Policies
Minister Scindia reiterated the government’s readiness to implement robust national green policies, including the establishment of task forces to identify action points for green steel production. He also highlighted initiatives such as the Steel Scrap Recycling Policy aimed at enhancing the availability of domestically generated scrap.
About the Project
The inaugurated project at Jindal Stainless Limited in Hisar is the world’s first off-grid Green Hydrogen plant for the stainless steel industry. It features rooftop and floating solar capabilities and targets a considerable reduction in carbon emissions. Over the next two decades, the plant aims to mitigate around 2,700 Metric Tonnes of carbon emissions annually, contributing significantly to India’s sustainable development goals.
