Indian cricket captain Rohit Sharma has addressed speculation surrounding his absence from the fifth Test against Australia in Sydney. The 38-year-old’s decision to sit out the match, amid a string of low scores, sparked rumors about a potential retirement. However, Rohit has categorically denied stepping away from the game, stating his focus remains on the present and his family responsibilities.
In a candid conversation with Star Sports, Rohit shed light on his decision to miss the match. “I stood down, that is what I would say. The chat that I had with the coach and selector was very simple: I was not able to score runs with the bat. I am not in form. This is an important match; we needed a win. We couldn’t carry many out-of-form players. They backed my decision, which was difficult for me to take,” he explained.
Rohit’s struggles with the bat during the series were evident, managing just 31 runs in five innings. Reflecting on his thought process, he said, “The decision was taken after coming here. After Melbourne, there was New Year’s Day. On that day, I did not want to tell the coach and selector about this. I was trying but could not score, and it was important for me to step aside from this match.”
Retirement Speculations Addressed
Following his decision to opt out, cricketing legends Sunil Gavaskar and Ravi Shastri speculated that this might mark the end of Rohit’s Test career. Rohit, however, dismissed these claims emphatically.

“I don’t believe in what happens five months later. I want to focus on the present. This decision is not a retirement decision. I am not going to move away from the game. But, for this game, I am out because I am not scoring with the bat. There is no guarantee that after five months I will not score runs. Every day life changes. I believe in myself,” he affirmed.
He further added, “At the same time, I have to be realistic as well. I have played this game for so long. Nobody from outside can decide when I should go, or sit out, or lead the team. I am sensible, mature, father of two. I know what I want in life.”
A Door Opens for Shubman Gill
Rohit’s absence from the match has created an opportunity for young talent Shubman Gill to take the field in this decisive encounter of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. With India trailing 1-2 in the series, this match holds significant weight.
Addressing his team-first mindset, Rohit said, “I have not come so far to just sit out. I have come to win matches for the team. But sometimes, you need to understand what the need of the team is. If you don’t think about the team, then why are you here? It’s all about teamwork. I can’t speak about others, but I am like this. If somebody does not like this, it’s okay.”
When the anchor acknowledged his contributions as captain, Rohit humorously responded, “Arre kahin ja nahi raha hu main (I am not going anywhere).”
As India steps into this crucial match, all eyes will be on how the team adapts to this change and whether Shubman Gill can rise to the occasion. Meanwhile, Rohit’s determination to continue contributing to Indian cricket remains unwavering.
