The Indian Medical Association (IMA) on Wednesday suspended the membership of Dr Sandip Ghosh, the former Principal of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata, where a young doctor was tragically raped and murdered earlier this month.

Dr Ghosh’s suspension comes amid serious allegations of negligence in handling the aftermath of the incident, including a failure to promptly file a police complaint upon discovering the victim’s body.

Although Dr Sandip Ghosh does not face charges directly related to the murder, he is embroiled in a separate legal battle, facing non-bailable corruption charges. Allegations of corruption at RG Kar Hospital, including accusations from a former employee that Dr. Ghosh was involved in trafficking dead bodies and biomedical waste, have sparked further controversy.

Some claims suggest that these corrupt activities may be linked to the doctor’s murder, intensifying the scrutiny on Dr Sandip Ghosh.

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), which is leading the probe, conducted an exhaustive 11-hour search of Dr Ghosh’s residence in Kolkata, seizing what they described as a “wealth of evidence”. The CBI has reportedly questioned Dr Ghosh for nearly 90 hours as part of their investigation. Additionally, Dr Sandip Ghosh underwent a lie-detector test on Monday, further underscoring the seriousness of the ongoing investigation.

In its brief statement, the IMA addressed the grievances raised by the parents of the murdered doctor, noting their dissatisfaction with Dr Ghosh’s handling of the situation. The IMA stated that the disciplinary committee had decided to suspend Dr. Ghosh’s membership, referencing accusations from other doctors in Bengal that his actions had brought the medical profession into disrepute.

Dr Sandip Ghosh has been under intense public and professional scrutiny since the incident. He resigned from his position at RG Kar Hospital shortly after the doctor’s body was found, citing moral responsibility. However, the West Bengal government’s decision to appoint him as the head of Calcutta National Medical College and Hospital (CNMC) sparked outrage.

The staff at the CNMC and protestors alike reacted with fierce opposition, leading to the Calcutta High Court’s intervention. The court ordered Dr Sandip Ghosh to take a “long leave,” and his appointment has fueled criticism that the state government is protecting him.

The case has also sparked broader debates about the safety of doctors in India, with calls for greater accountability and reform within the healthcare system. As the investigation continues, the public and medical community alike are watching closely for further developments.
