His first assignment will be the series against Sri Lanka, where he will miss the services of key players Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and Jasprit Bumrah, who have been rested.
The BCCI plans to invite applications for the team’s support staff soon, with the tenures of batting coach Vikram Rathour, bowling coach Paras Mhambrey, and fielding coach T Dilip having ended after the T20 World Cup. The board is giving Gautam Gambhir the freedom to choose his support staff, although it’s uncertain if the team will have a separate batting coach given Gambhir’s success as an opening batsman.
Gambhir’s first series in charge will feature three T20Is and ODIs in Sri Lanka. The Indian board is allowing the captain of the T20 World Cup-winning team and senior players to take additional rest before returning for the series against Bangladesh in September.
This transition marks a significant moment for Indian cricket as Gambhir steps into the coaching role, bringing his vast experience and strategic mindset to the national team.
