Washington: Former President of United States Donald Trump said his Florida residence is being “raided” by agents of the FBI and called the act “prosecutorial misconduct”.

While Trump did not divulge details, the FBI too kept mum on why the searches were being conducted. However, several US media outlets quoted sources and said the FBI sleuths were conducting court-authorised searches in connection with the potential mishandling of classified documents.

A footage on social media showed FBI vehicles outside the residence and protestors waving banners against the searches. The New York Times quoted Trump as saying, “It is prosecutorial misconduct, the weaponization of the Justice System, and an attack by Radical Left Democrats who desperately don’t want me to run for President in 2024. Such an assault could only take place in broken, third-world countries. Sadly, America has now become one of those countries. They even broke into my safe!”

Meanwhile, a few Republicans also took to social media to criticize the raid. The raid comes months after The National Archives in February said it had recovered 15 boxes of documents from Trump’s Florida estate and media reports said they contained highly classified texts. These were documents allegedly taken away by Trump when he left Washington after his defeat.

Staff at the White House also regularly found bundles of paper clogging the toilets, which led them to believe that the former President had tried to get rid of some documents. The reported revelation is a part of a forthcoming book by New York Times reporter Maggie Haberman.
