New Delhi: Amid a war of words over the death of a man who fell into a 40-feet-deep borewell in the Keshopur Mandi area in Northwest Delhi, PWD Minister Atishi asked the Chief Secretary to ensure welding and sealing of all abandoned borewells across Delhi in 48 hours.
The minister also asked the Chief Secretary to conduct a probe in case of any lapse on the part of the Delhi Jal Board (DJB) and to take strongest possible action.
“A deeply unfortunate incident has taken place in Delhi today, where someone has fallen into an abandoned borewell of the Keshopur Sewerage Treatment Plant. While this borewell was on a land that had been handed over to the Delhi Metro in 2020, nonetheless, it is our responsibility to examine if any lapses have taken place on the part of Delhi Jal Board and to ensure that no such incident takes place in Delhi in the future,” Atishi said in a letter to the Chief Secretary.
She further wrote, “Chief Secretary is hereby directed to conduct a time-bound enquiry into the incident and take strong and exemplary action against any officers found responsible and ensure that all government and private abandoned borewells to be welded and sealed immediately and compliance reported to me within 48 hours.”
Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal tweeted, “Sad news came that a man who fell into a borewell was found dead. May his soul rest in peace. I would like to thank NDRF, whose team made every possible effort in the 14-hour rescue operation. NDRF has supported the people of Delhi in every difficult time.”
